Congratulations to Tadiwa for winning a trio of awards for his PhD work! Over the past few months, Tadiwa has been awarded the following: - Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) International - CAN-TAP-TALENT PhD Award - Arthritis Society PhD Salary Award
The Manske Lab has a lot of success to celebrate at this year’s McCaig Institute Summer Student Symposium! Congratulations to Chris Brunet for winning 1st Place at the poster presentations for his work “Modelling Joint Contact Stresses of the Trapeziometacarpal (TMC) Joint Using Dynamic CT Imaging and Discrete Element Analysis” Congratulations to Mataea Armstrong, who was recognized as this year’s recipient of the Linda Marchuk Memorial Award for all of her outstanding work and volunteer service during the first year of his graduate studies!
Congratulations to Yousif Al-Khoury for successfully defending his MSc titled “Super-Resolution of Cone Beam Computed Tomography: Applications in Bone Analysis for Rheumatoid Arthritis”. Yousif has been so helpful with everything computer-related, helping set students up with ML-based segmentations and GitHub, and setting the website up. We wish Yousif all the best as he pursues his Ph.D. at Concordia University this fall!
Chloe Chen, a former summer student and prodigy out of the Manske lab, has just been recognized in the Avenue’s inaugural top 20 under 20 list featuring Calgary’s rising stars. You’ll find Chloe on page 76 of the online issue here.
Congratulations to Rachel Klassen for succesfully defending her MSc titled “Characterizing Bone Remodeling in Osteoarthritic Bone Marrow Lesions in Human Knees Using Tetracycline Histology”. The Manske lab and its plants will miss you very much and wish you the very best as you go on to pursue a doctorate at Memorial University in St. John’s.
Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Manske and Dr. Danielle Whittier on receiving a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Planning and Dissemination Grant – Institute Community Support. Their project focuses on advancing musculoskeletal research by sharing an open-source bone microarchitecture analysis toolkit. Co-applicants included: Dr. Steve Boyd, PhD; Dr. Michael Kuczynski, PhD; Dr. Matthias Walle, PhD.
The Manske Lab’s work on imaging joint damage after a sprained ankle was recognized by the Arthritis Society Canada to be among the top 10 arthritis research breakthroughs in 2024. Read the full article here.

Congratulations to Oyinda Oduba for succesfully defending her MSc titled “Atlas of articular cartilage properties: functional and structural comparison across species”. Oyinda’s infectious laugh and joyful prescence will be missed. We wish her all the best in all future pursuits.
Congratulations Tadiwa for winning Mitacs award to travel to the University of Bologna for an internship with Dr. Fulvia Taddei.
Congratulations to Dr. Samantha Leech for succesfully defending her PhD titled “Brain Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy: Advances and Applications to Chronic Pain in Knee Osteoarthritis”. The Manske lab wishes her the best of luck as she pursues medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Kuczynski for succesfully defending his PhD titled “Characterizing the structure-function relationship of hand osteoarthritis using dynamic and high resolution CT imaging”. The Manske lab wishes him the best of luck as he begins his post doctoral fellowship with Dr. Danielle Whittier here at the McCaig Institute.

Congratulations to Tadiwa Waungana for succesfully defending his MSc titled “Bone and 3D Joint Space Width Analysis in Knee Osteoarthritis using Weight Bearing CT”. However, the good bye party will have to wait as Tadiwa is continuing his PhD studies in the Manske lab.
Congratulations Ainsley for winning the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, one of the most prestigious awards available to doctoral students in Canada, valued at $50,000 per year for three years.
